Why do my miters keep opening up?
Almost always wood movement. When trim goes on tight in a damp winter and the house dries out in summer, the wood shrinks and the corner opens. We fix that by acclimating the material in your home first and leaving a small gap for movement, then caulking so the joint reads tight year-round. Cheap, un-acclimated trim jammed into a corner is what splits.
MDF or solid wood for trim in Bellingham?
For paint-grade trim, MDF and primed finger-joint are actually more stable than solid wood here because they don’t cup or check with humidity swings, and they take paint beautifully. We use solid wood (oak, maple, or clear vertical-grain fir) when you want a stain-grade look. Near a bath or an exterior door we back-prime or seal whatever we use.
How long does a room of trim take?
A single room of base and casing is usually one day on site, plus a day or two of acclimation before that. A whole-house package of base, casing, and crown runs several days depending on how many rooms and how square the walls are. We give you a specific timeline with the quote.
