09 / Questions

Frequently asked questions.

The questions we hear most from Bellingham homeowners, answered straight.

Can’t a handyman just do my trim?
A handyman can, and you’ll usually see it. Finish carpentry is the visible craft: tight returns, no gaps at the corners, and casing that lines up across a doorway. When you’re comparing bids, ask to see joints, not just finished rooms. That one question tells you who actually does this for a living.
Won’t my new trim crack and split like the last guy’s?
Not if it’s done for our climate. Bellingham swings from a closed-up rainy winter to a dry late summer, and that movement is what opens up miters. We acclimate the material in your home before it goes on the wall, back-prime or seal trim near baths and exterior doors, and gap for seasonal wood movement instead of jamming everything tight. That’s the difference between trim that holds and trim that splits.
How much does finish carpentry cost in Bellingham?
Trim and molding usually runs $6 to $14 per linear foot installed, so a typical room lands around $700 to $2,500. Interior doors are $250 to $700 each installed. Built-ins run $1,500 to $7,500 per unit depending on size and whether they’re paint-grade or stain-grade. We publish honest ranges on each service page and hand you an exact line-item quote after we see the space.
Can you match the trim in my old Bellingham house?
Usually, yes. A lot of original casing and base profiles in Fairhaven, Columbia, and the Lettered Streets are out of production, so matching is part scribing to out-of-square walls and part finding or milling a profile that reads right. We’ll tell you up front whether we can match the existing profile exactly or get close enough that the eye doesn’t catch it.
Do I need a permit for trim, built-ins, or stairs?
Most trim and built-in work is cosmetic and needs no permit. Where it can change is stairs: if we touch stair geometry, guardrail height, or anything tied to egress, the City of Bellingham may require a permit. We flag that before we start, not after, so there are no surprises.
Should I do paint-grade or stain-grade?
Paint-grade (MDF or primed finger-joint) is stable, budget-friendly, and the right call when the trim is paint-grade. Stain-grade (oak, maple, clear vertical-grain fir, or quartersawn stock) is for when you want the wood to show. We walk you through the trade-offs for your rooms and your budget so the choice fits the house.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Bellingham Carpentry Co. is operated by Apex Builderz LLC, a licensed, bonded, and insured Washington general contractor (WA Contractor Reg. APEXBBL749B1, UBI 604-945-342). We carry general liability and we’re happy to show you the paperwork. Just ask.
How quickly will I hear back after requesting a quote?
Fast. Most folks hear from us within 15 minutes during business hours, seven days a week, 8am to 5pm. We don’t make people wait around. If you’ve got a project, we want to talk about it.
